Ram Brew Wins Gold at Great American Beer Festival
The hard work and preparation of the brewers at the Ram Restaurant and Brewery in Indianapolis and C.B.&Potts in Colorado paid off this weekend at the Great American Beer Festival.
Indianapolis brewer Dave Colt was awarded both the gold and silver medals in Category 16 for Wood- and Barrel-Aged Beer.
“I felt like I was 10 feet off the ground when I won,” says Colt. “It was a good time, there were a lot of good beers and it was fun to celebrate with all the Ram brewers in Denver.”
The gold medal was awarded to Old Jack’s Stout, a beer Colt describes as “a nice roasty American- Style stout that has been aged for 10 months in a Jack Daniels barrel.”
Colt’s Buffalo Bock, a “malty, German Spring bock that has been aged in a Buffalo Trace bourbon barrel for eight months” was awarded a silver medal in the same category. The Buffalo Bock won a bronze medal at the last year’s GABF.
Dennis O’Harrow, head brewer for C.B. &. Potts in Flatirons, won a gold medal for his brew Java the Hut in Category 6- Coffee Flavored Beers.
“The beer is a soft English-style Porter infused with fresh-roasted Kenyan and Costa Rican coffees,” says O’Harrow. “I was very excited to win gold with it!”
The gold medal represents O’Harrow’s first at the GABF. His brew Java the Hut was also recognized with a gold medal at the World Beer Cup earlier this year.
C.B. & Potts also won a silver medal in Category 26- Dortmunder Style Export for the Westminster Export, brewed by Steve Turner in Westminster and a bronze medal in Category 64- Belgian Style Strong Specialty Ale for the Golden Armor, brewed by TJ Compton in the Denver Tech Center.
“Brewing with C.B. &. Potts and The Ram is fantastic because they give us brewers a lot of freedom to express our tastes and latitude to brew a variety of flavors in our seasonal beers,” says O’Harrow. “The GABF was a good time, there were a lot of good beers and it was fun to celebrate with all the C.B. & Potts and Ram brewers in Denver.”
Ram Restaurant and Brewery and C.B.&Potts Restaurant and Brewery brew their own ales and lagers at each of their locations. Some of their hand-crafted beers are featured year-round while other brews are considered ‘seasonal’ and alternate on the taps throughout the year. Brewing medal winning ales and lagers, the company has been recognized by the Great American Beer Festival with 34 medals since 1996.
The 2008 GABF was held October 9-11 in Denver, Colo. Judges evaluated more than 2900 beers representing 472 breweries from across the nation. Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded in each of 75 categories.
